ADHD Assessment

Online Adult ADHD Assessment

A comprehensive telehealth assessment for adult ADHD — understanding your symptoms, history and next steps, delivered securely by video.

The assessment process

An ADHD assessment is a structured clinical process conducted by a FRANZCP-qualified psychiatrist via secure telehealth. Here's what to expect at each stage.

  1. 01

    Initial consultation

Your first telehealth appointment involves a detailed clinical interview. Your psychiatrist will explore your symptoms, concerns and reasons for seeking assessment.

  2. 02

    Developmental history

ADHD is a developmental condition, so your psychiatrist will ask about childhood, education and patterns over your lifetime. Questionnaires may be used to gather structured information.

  3. 03

    Clinical formulation

Your psychiatrist synthesises all information — interview, history, questionnaires and any collateral — to determine whether you meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD.

  4. 04

    Feedback & plan

You'll receive a clear explanation of the findings and, if ADHD is diagnosed, a discussion of treatment options. A report is provided to you and your GP.

Timeframes & what to expect

The full assessment typically takes place over two to three telehealth sessions, depending on complexity. Each session runs for approximately 45–60 minutes. You may also be asked to complete standardised questionnaires between appointments.

In some cases, your psychiatrist may request collateral information — such as school reports or input from a family member who knew you in childhood — to support a thorough and accurate assessment.

A GP referral is required to access Medicare rebates for your assessment. Once the assessment is complete, your psychiatrist will discuss the findings with you and outline recommended next steps, which may include ongoing treatment and shared care with your GP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can adult ADHD be assessed by telehealth?

Yes. A comprehensive ADHD assessment can be conducted very effectively by secure video. Your psychiatrist can take a detailed history, review questionnaires, and make a diagnosis by video. If collateral information is needed, this can be gathered with your permission.

How long does an ADHD assessment take?

The full assessment typically takes place over two to three telehealth sessions, depending on complexity. Each session runs for approximately 45–60 minutes. You may be asked to complete standardised questionnaires between appointments to support the assessment.

Do I need collateral information from my childhood?

It can be helpful, but it is not always possible. Your psychiatrist may ask for school reports, input from a family member who knew you in childhood, or other historical information. This supports a thorough assessment, but the assessment can proceed based on your own detailed account if collateral is not available.

What happens if I am diagnosed with ADHD?

If ADHD is diagnosed, your psychiatrist will discuss treatment options with you, which may include medication, psychological strategies, and practical supports. You will receive a detailed report, and recommendations will be discussed with your GP to coordinate your ongoing care.

Do I need a GP referral for an ADHD assessment?

Yes. A GP referral is required to access Medicare rebates for your assessment. Your GP can send the referral directly to us or you can submit it through our online form. We will arrange your initial appointment once the referral is received.
