Online Psychiatry

See an Online Psychiatrist, Anywhere in Australia

Telehealth psychiatry brings specialist mental health care to you — by secure video, wherever you are. No travel, no long waitlists.

How telehealth psychiatry works

Telehealth psychiatry works just like an in-person consultation — the difference is you attend from home or any private space using a secure video link. Here's what to expect.

  1. 01

    Get a GP referral

Visit your GP for a referral and, if eligible, a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This unlocks Medicare rebates for your telehealth appointments.

  2. 02

    Book your appointment

Send your referral through our online form or have your GP's clinic send it directly. We'll contact you to arrange a convenient time.

  3. 03

    Attend by secure video

Join your consultation from a private space using a secure video link. No travel, no waiting rooms — just you and your psychiatrist.

  4. 04

    Ongoing care

Your psychiatrist coordinates ongoing treatment, prescriptions and shared care with your GP, all delivered via telehealth.

GP referral & Medicare rebates

To access Medicare rebates for your telehealth psychiatry appointment, you'll need a referral from your GP (or another medical specialist). Your GP can also prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan if clinically appropriate, which may increase the rebate you're entitled to.

Once your referral is received, our team will contact you to arrange an appointment. After each consultation, we'll provide your GP with a summary so your care stays coordinated.

Medicare rebates apply to eligible telehealth psychiatry consultations. Any out-of-pocket gap will be clearly explained before your appointment. See our fees page for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is telehealth psychiatry as effective as seeing a psychiatrist in person?

Yes. For most adults, psychiatric assessment and ongoing management can be conducted very effectively by secure video. Your psychiatrist can conduct a thorough clinical interview, formulate diagnoses, prescribe and monitor medication, and provide ongoing review. If an in-person assessment is ever required, your psychiatrist will discuss this with you.

Do I need a GP referral to see a psychiatrist online?

Yes. A referral from your GP is required to access Medicare rebates for your telehealth psychiatry appointment. Your GP can send the referral directly to us or you can submit it through our online form. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP may also support your access to Medicare rebates.

What do I need to participate in a telehealth appointment?

You need a private, quiet space, a device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone), and a stable internet connection. You should plan to attend from a secure location where you can speak confidentially. Our team will send you a secure video link before your appointment.

How does telehealth help if I live regionally or remotely?

Telehealth makes psychiatry accessible anywhere in Australia, regardless of distance from a major city. You no longer need to travel hours or even fly for a psychiatric appointment — you can see a FRANZCP-qualified psychiatrist by video from your home, bringing the same standard of specialist care to every community.

How much does a telehealth psychiatry appointment cost?

Consultation costs depend on the type and length of appointment. Medicare rebates are available with a valid GP referral, which significantly reduces the out-of-pocket cost. We'll explain any gap fee clearly before your appointment. See our fees page for detailed information.

Will my confidentiality be protected in a telehealth consultation?

Yes. All consultations use an encrypted video platform that meets Australian health data privacy standards. Your privacy is protected in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 and Australian health legislation. The conversation remains confidential, just as it would in a physical office.
