Bipolar Screening (MDQ)

This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

These questions are for educational purposes only. They do not replace a clinical assessment, and a formal diagnosis can only be made by a qualified health professional such as a psychiatrist. If you're concerned about your mental health, please speak with your GP or a psychiatrist.

This screening tool uses the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), a validated instrument designed to screen for bipolar disorder. It asks about periods of elevated or irritable mood and whether these have caused problems in your life.

What to expect

  • 15 questions, taking approximately 3 min
  • Your answers are processed in your browser — they are never sent anywhere.
  • You'll see your score, severity band and recommended next steps immediately.

The MDQ has three parts: 13 yes/no questions about specific symptoms that can occur during periods of elevated mood, a question about whether these symptoms occurred at the same time, and a question about how much of a problem they caused. A positive screen requires 7 or more 'Yes' answers, symptoms occurring during the same period, and moderate or serious resulting problems.
